Trumpetters Drift Game Farm is a historic 5,000-hectare reserve located in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, situated between Grahamstown and Fort Peddie. The property overlooks the Great Fish River and is predominantly covered in Albany thicket vegetation. The farm is conveniently positioned approximately two hours from Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) and one hour from Port Alfred, in a malaria-free region.
The property's rich history dates back to 1817 when Lord Charles Somerset, Governor of the Cape Colony, established a rudimentary fort following Xhosa attacks on Grahamstown. Today, the historical stone fort remains part of the lodge complex, offering guests an opportunity to explore the region's heritage.
The accommodation consists of a three-bedroom farmhouse that sleeps six people, featuring two bathrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, and an open-plan living area with a patio overlooking the communal swimming pool. Additional accommodation options include River View rooms, each with en-suite facilities, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi. These rooms have access to a shared kitchen and open onto patios with views of the Great Fish River.
The game farm boasts diverse wildlife including Kudu, Impala, Nyala, Zebra, Eland, Waterbuck, and Giraffe. While free from large predators, the reserve is home to smaller predatory species such as blackback jackals, bat-eared foxes, and caracals. Visitors can engage in various activities including game drives, hiking, and fishing, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a tranquil nature retreat with family and friends.
