ULUMBAZA Wine Bar(n) @ Springfontein Wine Estate

Rated 4.5 in 186 Reviews

organic wines exceptional food beautiful setting fine dining

Tucked away at the end of a country road about 5km from Stanford, ULUMBAZA Wine Bar(n) offers an authentic Cape Winelands experience without the crowds or pretension of more commercial estates. The name "Ulumbaza" means "House of Joy" in Nguni language, and the 200-year-old converted thatched stable lives up to this promise.

Wine with a Difference

What sets Springfontein apart is their unique terroir - the estate sits on rare maritime limestone soils found nowhere else in South African winemaking. Their organically grown wines, particularly the Pinotage and Chenel (a local cross between Chenin Blanc and Ugni Blanc), express this distinctive character beautifully. The estate has been operating organically for over 20 years, focusing on natural winemaking processes with minimal intervention.

Food & Experience

The Bar(n) serves seasonal, regional cuisine that pairs perfectly with their wines. Their cheese soup comes highly recommended by locals, as does the Pinotage Salt Chocolate Brownie for dessert. During winter, the large fireplace creates a cozy atmosphere while summer visitors can enjoy the shade of ancient oak trees with mountain views.

Wine tastings are available daily, with guided options if you'd like to learn more about their unique winemaking philosophy. Expect to pay between R15-R25 per tasting glass - not the cheapest in the region, but justified by the quality and uniqueness.

Local Tips

  • Best visit time: Sundays when the atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly
  • Special event: If visiting between January and March, try to catch their annual Harvest Celebration where guests can participate in grape picking and stomping
  • Try the steak nights: From Sunday to Tuesday evenings, their steaks are legendary
  • Bring a camera: The views of the Klein River Mountains are spectacular

Broader Experience

Make a day of it by combining your visit with a cruise on the Klein River aboard their African Queen boat (book in advance). The estate also offers accommodation in several cottages and at their River Lodge for those wanting to fully immerse themselves in the farm experience.

For the adventurous, the farm has marked hiking and cycling paths through vineyards, fynbos fields, and eucalyptus forests. The nearby Hermanus and Gansbaai are famous for whale watching and shark cage diving respectively.

Bookings recommended, especially for dinner and weekend lunches.
