Utshwayelo, Kosi Mouth Lodge And Camp

Utshwayelo, Kosi Mouth Lodge and Camp is a community-owned accommodation located in Kosi Bay, in the far north eastern corner of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is situated at the entrance gate to the Kosi Bay Mouth Reserve and Estuary, which forms part of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, a natural World Heritage site. The lodge is the closest establishment to the Kosi Bay Mouth beach and estuary, situated approximately 2.5 km from the beach and 5 km from the Mozambique border.

The area is known for its ancient fishing kraals/utshwayelos erected and tended by the Thonga people, following age-old traditions passed down through generations. Kosi Bay is 'a wonderful aquarium and the most gorgeous aviary', with a system of four lakes ranging from freshwater to saline, feeding into the ocean at the mouth. Visitors can engage in various activities such as wading around the traditional fish traps, snorkeling in the estuary with its kaleidoscope of over 200 species of tropical fish, surfing from unspoiled beaches, boating on the magnificent lakes, fly fishing from the rocks, and observing turtles during the nesting season from October to March.

Utshwayelo Lodge and Camp offers a Safari-style stay in permanent luxury tents, as well as large, private campsites positioned under magnificent Waterberry trees. The campsites are enclosed in natural reed bomas and equipped with amenities such as water taps, lights, electrical plugs, and dustbins. Guests have access to serviced ablution facilities with hot running water, a communal lapa with a bar, lounge, DStv, and a swimming pool. The property is an informal, relaxed lodge with a safe environment where children can play and roam freely within the campsite and fenced lodge area.
