White House Guest Farm

Rated 4.7 in 190 Reviews

The White House Guest Farm is a historic property situated on 15,000 hectares of land along the B1 in Grünau, Namibia. The establishment offers modern accommodations with en-suite bathrooms and well-stocked fridges, as well as camping facilities for nature enthusiasts. Guests can enjoy various activities including farm tours, day trips to nearby attractions, and relaxation by the farm pool.

The property has a rich history dating back to 1912 when Frederich Haschke purchased the farm Mickberg for £2,500. Known then as "the waterless farm," Haschke built the house for his bride-to-be, Martha Feiber, using materials imported from Germany through Lüderitz Bay and transported via rail to Klein-Karas station. Water for construction was sourced from the neighboring Grabwasser farm.

The couple's story took a dramatic turn during World War I when South African troops invaded the German colony in 1915. Haschke and his wife fled northward but were arrested on April 17th. Their possessions were confiscated, and they were separated - Frederich was sent to a prisoner-of-war camp in Kimberley, while Martha was imprisoned in Gibeon. The ordeal severely affected Frederich, who was temporarily institutionalized at Valkenburg mental hospital in Cape Town before being deported to Germany in 1918, where he eventually reunited with Martha.

Today, the White House Guest Farm stands as both a historical landmark and a modern accommodation facility, offering visitors the opportunity to experience Namibia's natural beauty, peace, and tranquility, complete with spectacular sunsets and starlit nights.
