Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge was originally constructed in the 1970s as a state-owned enterprise, although the former Batlokoa chief Wessels Mota had built a stone hut for backpackers on the site in the 1950s. In the mid-1990s, the lodge was gradually transferred to the current King of the local Batlokoa community, Morena Mota, who is the son of Wessels Mota. The state officially designated the lodge as a community asset in 2000.

Management challenges prompted the Traditional Council of the Batlokoa, under the leadership of Morena Mota, to enter into an agreement with Transfrontier Park Destinations (TFPD) in 2010 to serve as management and marketing operators. TFPD now manages Witsieshoek and the surrounding land and tourism activities on behalf of the Batlokoa community, focusing on the development of a viable and sustainable tourism industry that balances the needs of the local community with those of nature.

The Batlokoa community still owns the lodge, and the majority of its revenue remains within the community. Additionally, the Batlokoa provide the majority of the lodge's workforce. Any proposals regarding the future of the lodge and its finances are relayed to King Mota and his council for discussion before any decisions are made. Much of the artwork and woven items in the lodge are also made within the local Batlokoa community and Qwa Qwa region.

The lodge offers accommodation with twin beds, sheets, pillows, and blankets, as well as space heating with oil heaters. There are two communal ablution facilities (one male and one female), each with a shower, basin, and toilet. The lodge also features a communal kitchen.
