Woodbury Lodge is a prestigious four-star establishment situated on the Amakhala Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Perched dramatically against a cliff overlooking the Bushman's River valley, this malaria-free destination has been operated by the Gush family since 1999, offering an intimate, family-oriented safari experience.
The accommodation comprises seven stone-and-thatch suites, including two family lodges that can accommodate up to four guests. Each suite is nestled within indigenous forest and features air conditioning, spacious en-suite bathrooms with heated floors, and private decks offering panoramic views of the plains. The secluded nature of each suite allows guests to observe wildlife, including elephants, zebra, and giraffe, from their private viewing areas.
The main lodge features a dining area and lounge with expansive decks overlooking the Woodbury plains, providing the perfect setting for sunrise views and evening gatherings around the fire under African skies. The facility offers various activities, including Big Five game drives conducted by professional field guides, guided bush walks, river cruises, and horse trail safaris. Children under six years old are not permitted on game drives, but childminding services are available.
The lodge is staffed by local community members who are deeply knowledgeable about the area and committed to providing exceptional service. The establishment is known for its hearty South African meals, outstanding game viewing opportunities, and intimate bush setting. A conservation levy is applicable for all stays, with different rates for adults and children under 12 years.
For those seeking a more rustic experience, the Woodbury portfolio also includes the three-star Woodbury Tented Camp on the same reserve.
