Zwakala River Retreat is a family-owned establishment nestled in the Magoebaskloof Mountains of Limpopo, South Africa. Located on the banks of a fresh water stream, the retreat offers a serene escape featuring earthy cottages, indigenous flora, and natural surroundings that promote a slower pace of life.
The accommodation options include various cottages, cabins, and campsites. Most units deliberately operate without electricity, embracing candlelight, gas appliances, and donkey boilers for hot water to create an authentic, romantic atmosphere. The Scandinavian-inspired River Cabins and select cottages do offer electrical connections. All accommodations are equipped with quality linens, down duvets, and necessary amenities for comfortable stays.
The property features several distinct accommodation units, including the two-bedroom Legodi Cottage, the eco-friendly Cob House, the converted Barn House with two loft apartments, and multiple River Cabins. Two camping options are available: the main Zwakala Campsite and the private Kholo's Campsite, with the latter requiring 4x4 vehicle access.
The retreat houses Mina's Art Cafe and Farm Venue, housed in a renovated 1900s shed and farmhouse. This venue, characterized by stone reveals, stick ceilings, and a large fireplace, can accommodate up to 150 guests for weddings and celebrations. The space includes a fully equipped kitchen and offers spectacular valley views from its terraced garden.
Additional facilities include an award-winning craft brewery offering natural beers, and the Noka River Spa providing treatments using local and South African natural products. Visitors can enjoy activities such as river swimming, walking, trout fishing, cycling, and exploring the surrounding area's hiking trails, indigenous forests, and local attractions.
