Experience the Untamed Beauty of Walker Bay
The Diversity Trail delivers an authentic five-day, four-night slackpacking adventure showcasing the best of Walker Bay's extraordinary natural landscapes. Based at the luxurious Bellavista Country Place, this guided journey explores the region's striking biodiversity through daily walks across fynbos-covered hills, ancient milkwood forests, white sand dunes, and pristine coastline.
Part of the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy, the trail traverses over 22,000 hectares of protected land where more than 1,100 indigenous plant species grow, including seven found nowhere else on Earth. The region's conservation significance cannot be overstated - it's one of the world's botanical hotspots.
Daily Trail Highlights
- Day 1: Historical Stanford village walk followed by a tranquil river cruise aboard the Lady Stanford, ideal for spotting waterbirds
- Day 2 (11km): Exploration of the Grootbos Nature Reserve with its ancient milkwood forests, secret valleys and panoramic views from Pinnacle Peak
- Day 3 (9km): Coastal journey through dune fields to Klipgat Cave, an archaeological site dating back to Middle Stone Age occupation
- Day 4 (9km): Flower Valley Farm and Hermanus winelands walk, finishing with a visit to South Africa's first Fynbos Florilegium
Local Insights
October brings spectacular wildflower displays when the fynbos erupts in color. Between June and November, Southern Right whales can often be spotted from the De Kelders cliffs. The trail pace is adjusted according to group ability and weather conditions, making it accessible for reasonably fit hikers of various experience levels.
Visitors contribute directly to conservation efforts with proceeds supporting alien vegetation clearing, fire management, and ecological monitoring. The trail provides exclusive access to private lands normally closed to the public.
