Birkenhead Estate

Rated 4.1 in 7 Reviews

craft beer wine tasting restaurant scenic views family-friendly

Situated on the R326 just outside Stanford, Birkenhead Estate combines a working craft brewery with a family-friendly restaurant and vineyard. The estate has evolved from its founding in 1998 to become a multifaceted destination offering local beer, wine, and food in the heart of the Overberg.

The Brewery Experience

As one of South Africa's first craft breweries, Birkenhead produces six year-round beers, including their signature Premium Lager "Lazy Leopard" - slightly sweeter than your typical continental lager. The brewery operates on-site, with brewing often taking place at night in true craft fashion.

Local Tip: Book a brewery tour (available at 11:00 or 15:00) to see the brewing process firsthand and learn about the story behind their beers, which pay homage to the HMS Birkenhead shipwreck along the nearby coastline.

Food & Wine

The estate's restaurant serves pub-style fare with a South African twist, designed to complement their estate-produced beers and wines. On sunny days, the outdoor seating area provides spectacular views of the Klein River mountains, while indoor seating with a fireplace offers comfort during cooler weather.

Walker Bay Vineyards, part of the estate, cultivates grapes in the cool-climate terroir with unique soil types including decomposed granite, shale and limestone outcrops. This allows for wines with concentrated flavors and true sense of place, particularly evident in their Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir offerings.
