A Unique Craft Beer and Wine Destination

Walker Bay Vineyards and Birkenhead Brewery offers a complete South African wine and craft beer experience just outside Stanford. Established in 1998, this pioneering craft brewery was one of the first in South Africa, drawing inspiration from the HMS Birkenhead shipwreck along the nearby coastline.

The estate sits at the foot of the Klein River mountains with spectacular views across the valley. The unique terroir combines different soil types including decomposed granite, shale and limestone outcrops, allowing for wines with distinctive character and balanced flavor profiles.

Wine & Beer Experience

  • Craft Beer: Six staple brews plus seasonal specials, with the award-winning Lazy Leopard Premium Lager and Honey Blonde being crowd favorites
  • Wine Selection: Estate-grown varietals including Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Pinot Noir
  • Tastings: Beer tastings, wine tastings, and wine and cheese pairings available daily
  • Brewery Tours: Available at 11:00 or 15:00 with advanced booking

The brewing team includes long-time brewmaster Benson, who has perfected the brewing process since the brewery's founding in 1998.

Dining & Facilities

The pub-style restaurant serves traditional South African dishes with a modern twist, perfectly complementing the estate-produced beers and wines. Winter visitors appreciate the cozy fireplaces, while summer patrons enjoy outdoor seating with mountain views.

The venue is family-friendly with ample space for children to play safely (though parents should note the proximity of the Klein River). Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome throughout the property.
